In the early 17th Century, King James granted lands in Ulster to Sir Hugh Montgomery and Sir James Hamilton, two Scottish Lairds. Comber with its rich agricultural lands was perfect for growing crops and it had rich woodlands and fish-filled rivers as well as easy access to Strangford Lough. Hamilton & Montgomery both attempted settlements in this area, Sir James Hamilton in a new town and Sir Hugh Montgomery in the auld town. We hear more of the Ulster-Scots history of the town and its significance to the linen industry and the story of Titanic.
